5 Star History

Located in Hatfield, Arkansas, in the heart of the beautiful Ouachita Mountains, our family-owned and operated business is dedicated to developing the finest all-natural saddle pads, sport boots, and mohair cinches & breast collars as well as many other products for horses, ponies, and mules. We combine premium materials and craftsmanship so that you and your horse experience the best in comfort and performance.

5 Star began its journey in 1998 under the guidance of Vern and Laurel Wells, who envisioned a different kind of saddle pad—one that emphasized natural wool felt, cutting-edge design, and outstanding customer service. Tragically, Vern passed away not long after founding the company, but Laurel continued to carry out their shared vision. Over time, 5 Star refined its saddle pad concept and established a strong reputation for uncompromising quality.

Terry Moore, a third-generation logger and horseman based in Hatfield, Arkansas, learned about 5 Star Equine Products in 2012. Terry took a tour, recognized the potential, and concluded that 5 Star could be “the best-kept secret in the industry.” Driven by a passion for horses, Terry decided to purchase the company with a promise never to compromise the standards set by its founders.

 

Family Owned and Operated

The Moore family’s involvement doesn’t stop with Terry. From day one, his wife Julia and their daughters Amanda and Rachel played key roles in this new venture. Tragically, the family suffered the unimaginable loss of Amanda in 2014.  Today, Terry, his wife Julia, and daughter Rachel share a genuine passion for horses. Rachel, a barrel racer, leads the development of new products while introducing fresh new wear leather designs that appeal to current trends and personal style preferences. “We’re real horse people,” Terry often says. “We compete in shows and truly understand the importance of horse comfort. Our goal is to protect the equine athlete.”

5 Star has expanded beyond its saddle pads to include high-quality mohair cinches and breast collars, all crafted to ensure a natural fit for your horse. We also offer pad liners, sport boots, and our own specially formulated pad wash—everything you need to protect your investment and keep your equine partner comfortable. Whether you choose one of our classic designs or customize your pad with hand-tooled and hand-painted wear leathers, you’ll find our dedication to equine comfort remains. “We still try to develop what horse people want,” Terry explains. “We’ve redesigned some shapes and sizes to fit better under various saddles, but we stick to what works—a truly high-quality pad.”

Terry and Julia Moore

Owners

Terry and his wife, Julia, purchased 5 Star Equine Products and Supplies, Inc. November 11, 2012 from Mike and Laurel Easton. Terry oversees the day to day operation of 5 Star and Julia has been a school teacher at JoAnn Walters Elementary School for the last 28 years. Julia teaches Gifted and Talented as well as special needs students. Terry and Julia have two daughters, Amanda Rae Moore (deceased 2014) and Rachel Moore Lowrey; one grandson, Lucas Rae Lowery; and one son-in-law, Lance Lowery who oversees another business, PineMoore Shaving, Inc., owned by Terry and Julia. This company manufacturers and bags wood shavings for the horse and pet industry for bedding.

After Terry took over the reins at 5 Star, the company began to grow at a rapid pace each year. Terry’s vision for 5 Star has yet to be reached. He believes the sky is the limit for this young company, simply because the products are superior to other products of its kind on the market today. Terry is very proud of his staff and their dedication to this company. He really appreciated his sales reps and dealers for their hard work and belief in these fine 100% virgin wool felt saddle pads and 100% mohair cinches.

Terry is no stranger to the horse industry. He raised both girls from a very young age on horses and attended horse events all throughout the USA. Both Amanda and Rachel competed in Western Pleasure, Pole Bending, Queens Contest, Horsemanship, Cutting, and Barrel Racing. Through the years growing up, they both were Arkansas State Champions in Barrel Racing and Amanda was State Champion in Pony Pleasure at the age of 8 years old. Rachel was the All American Congress Champion in NYATT Barrel Race in 2001 and the same year was the All American Congress Youth Barrel Racing Champion. Both Amanda and Rachel placed other years at the All American Congress. They both placed at the AQHA Youth World in the top ten in Team Penning (Amanda), Cutting (Amanda) and Barrel Racing (Both). Rachel was Reserve Youth Champion in Barrel Racing in 2000. Amanda and Rachel placed at AQHA World Show in Amateur Barrel Racing, Rachel was the Reserve Amateur Barrel Racing Champion in 2005.

Terry’s wife, Julia, showed at the local state horse shows in Western Pleasure. Now she loves the trail riding experiences in the Rockies. Julia loves camping, Dutch oven cooking, her flowers, her Corgis: Rudy, Tess, and Audrey and counseling at Barton Bible Camp. Julia is light hearted and is loved by all. She really enjoys spending time with family and her grandson, Lucas. As most friends know, she is a great story teller!

Terry’s passion has always been riding and competing on his cutting horses. He bred and raised cutting and barrel prospect for over 20 years. Terry has competed at local and NCHA cutting events since 1985. He has won over $24,000 in NCHA money and was 2009 Reserve Champion in the $10,000 Amateur at the NCHA Eastern Nationals. He has won several local affiliate year end awards on his cutting horses through the years. Terry’s hobbies include riding horses, being around family – especially Julia, Rachel, Lucas and Lance. He loves to go out to Colorado and New Mexico and riding in the Rockies and camping with the Razorback Riders – a trail riding group from Arkansas. He also enjoys going to watch Rachel Barrel Race.

One of the biggest pleasures of owning 5 Star is helping people and their horses to have the best saddle pad protection available on the market today. He gets great satisfaction from all the customers stories of how well 5 Star Pads have helped their horses feel better therefore, perform better without hurting. Another pleasure Terry gets is meeting so many horse people. Most of all Terry enjoys that every day his partner at 5 Star is his daughter Rachel!

Rachel Moore-Lowrey

I was lucky enough to grow up with horses.  When I was younger, I enjoyed  several events such as Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Western Pleasure, Horsemanship and Cutting. One of my favorite classes when I was younger was Horsemanship in the Western Pleasure discipline. My horse was Gimmie Some Time and we could nail a Horsemanship pattern! I went to Horsemanship Camp a few summers and learned so much and had a lot of fun. Those Horsemanship skills have helped me become a better rider in the Barrel Racing discipline that I continue to show in today.

As kids my parents, sister, and I traveled all over to shows most weekends. We learned how hard work paid off, and very little comes easy. We made many special memories along the way. My sister and I were both fortunate to compete and win on a couple of nice horses. My sister’s horse was Kans Kandy, who we were able to raise three babies out of. Kandy’s first baby helped her partner win the Youth WPRA Rookie of the Year. I was able to train and compete on her last baby.  My youth horse was named Love A Lord aka Moses who took me to the winner’s circle at the AQHA Quarter Horse Congress 2x’s and many placings at the AQHA Youth world including Reserve World Champion.  He was a crazy fast, big, beautiful buckskin that was my “Once in a Lifetime” horse.  Little did we know at the time, but his bloodlines were the maternal side of the famous Bozo!  We won many races, sometimes blowing the third and still winning no problem. We made our last run together at my last AQHYA Youth World Show Finals. Then he enjoyed a happy retirement until the ripe old age of 31.

I am chasing kids more than barrels these days.  My son is all about baseball and football and my daughter is crazy about horses.  I still ride, more for my mental health than to get ready for a race!  My horses, you will see in many of our pictures for social media and print advertisements.  They are beautiful horses that knows her job her to look pretty for the camera.

There are many things I LOVE about working for 5 Star. The first, being able to work side by side with my Dad that we are both passionate about.  Helping the horses have more comfort where they are able to do their job to the best of their ability. When the horses are happy, we have happy customers! I love hearing the success stories our customers have had with our pads. I enjoy meeting and talking to people every day all around the world that enjoy horses like I do. I have learned so much since my first day here! I am so thankful for each person that works for 5 Star. Each person brings something special to this company. I appreciate being able to work with my Dad, day in and day out. I am fully aware of what a special opportunity 5 Star has given us, and I am so thankful God has given us this opportunity.

Jodie Mesko

Marketing and Design Manager

Jodie has been working for 5 Star Equine Products since September of 2014. She is responsible for all print and digital advertising material, photography, image editing, writing articles and ad copy, web management, product development and much more. She and her husband, Rich, have 2 adult daughters, Katie and Eliza who enjoy cheer, athletics, wakeboarding, snowboarding, ATVing, the outdoors and most of all horses! Katie trains horses using natural horsemanship and gives lessons in her spare time. She and Eliza both competed in high school rodeo and FFA. Both girls barrel raced and attended local play days growing up.

Jodie enjoys snowboarding, wakeboarding, photography and spending time with friends and family. Her favorite aspect of working for 5 Star is working in a family friendly environment where appreciation is shown to the employees on a daily basis. She also enjoys helping people worldwide find the Best Protection for their horse’s back!

Stephanie has been working for 5 Star Equine Products since June of 2014. She does everything from bookkeeping and sales to customer service and quality control. She keeps things running smooth so that your order is processed from start to finish with the quality and craftsmanship that only 5 Star can offer. Stephanie is originally from Texas and has two grown children, Jonathan and Rachel that are the light of her life. When asked if she had any horses, Stephanie’s response was, “No, I wish”! She enjoys gardening, DIY home improvement projects and spending time with friends. Her favorite aspect of working for 5 Star is helping people all around the world with customizing pads and cinchas.

Annette Allen

Shipping Dept Manager

Annette works in the shipping department and back up to accounting.  She started working at 5 Star in August 2020.  Her favorite thing about working at 5 Star is the family atmosphere.  It makes coming to work feel like being with family.  We all support each other.

Annette is married to James Allen who is an owner operator.  Annette has two step-children, son in law and a daughter in law. They have 7 grandkids, one granddaughter and six grandsons.  James and Annette enjoy boating, camping, hiking and most of all their family.  Their grandkids all know that Annette and James are big push overs when it comes to them and all they have to do is ask Grammie.  Annette used to have horses and enjoyed her “big” pets.

Gale Cearley

Sales Department Manager

Gale works in the sales department and has been with 5 Star since January of 2020. She enjoys working at 5 Star because of the friendly atmosphere and that we all work well together as a team.

In September of 2019, Gale received her Master’s in Accounting. She has been married to Matt for 16 years and has 3 boys and 2 Grandchildren. She currently does not have any horses but was around them as a child. In her spare time she enjoys reading, crocheting and riding the 4-wheeler with her husband.

Nancy Rhodes

Production Manager and Leather Artisan

Nancy is in charge of making sure that your order is handled with attention to detail and care in a timely matter from the time the sales order hits production until it goes out the door!  Nancy has worked for 5 Star Equine Products since 2010. She and her husband married in 1999. He is a carpenter and gunsmith. She has a daughter, Dylan, that was a member of the National Honor Society, National High School Scholars, played softball and basketball, and was a member of the Scholastic Team Barrel Racers. Dylan is now a mother to Nancy’s grandson, Cayden.  Nancy and her family own registered Quarter Horses. She enjoys Trail Riding, Western, and Play Days. Nancy’s daughter has two barrel horses that she competes with. Nancy enjoys going to barrel races with her daughter, leather working, and playing with Cayden, of course. “Baby” officially known as Babysgonecountry.

Baby is an 11 year old that came off the track in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.  Sam Dixon purchased her in April of 2018 from a couple in north Arkansas that had started her in barrels and also steer wrestling. Sam hauled her for a little while trying to let her get her pattern figured out, seasoning her a little more to the lights and sounds of rodeo. Sam and Baby participated in a few PRCA rodeos at the end of 2018 and the first of 2019 when Sam ran into a few guys that were interested in riding her.  With Sam’s work schedule being so busy, he asked Justin Shaffer if he would like to take her on the road. He did and has done a great job of finishing her on the box work and her pattern.  Since then, there has been quite a few bulldoggers on her. She has won a little over $350,000 in the past three and a half years.

Baby really has an attitude. Mostly when hauling her, but when feeding her in the morning you can tell whether it will be a lovely day or a dangerous one. She is definitely full of grit.  She likes to lay those ears back and get the job done. It is always a race against the hazing horse to the end of the pen.

Baby rides with a pad from 5 Star Equine. The Dixons have 4 different pads in which they rotate through with her.  They are all the performance pad, 7/8” thick, 32”X32” flex fit, all with color variations.  Sam likes the 5 Star Equine pads for multiple reasons.  The main one is because they are 100% pure wool which helps wick the sweat more than any other pad out there.  Not to mention, Sam hasn’t had any trouble with his horses having back pain since he stated using 5 Star, even with horses at home.

In steer wrestling the pad matters.  Guys are typically bigger and they are hanging off of the horse’s back asking them to carry that weight in an abnormal manner.  The way steer wrestlers work is why Sam chose the Flex Fit option in the withers.  It allows them to have a better range of motion, therefore, keeping the horse from being uncomfortable and in pain; that is why they are naturally the best.  5 Star Equine can customize a pad to fit your need with your horse or mule.

My name is Beau Peterson, I am 19 years old and a sophomore in college attending Oklahoma Panhandle State University. I am majoring in Biology in hopes of attending Nursing school after. I grew up in Council Grove, KS on a family owned and operated ranch. I grew up helping my parents out on the ranch. I have an older sister, Michaela Peterson. My whole family has always been apart of the rodeo scene, starting with my parents, then my sister and now me. I have recently purchased my WPRA card and am very anxious to be able to attend some of the Pro Rodeos this year. Dana Hokana is one of the top female trainers in the Quarter Horse industry. Dana has trained multiple Youth and Amateur Western Pleasure, Horsemanship, Western Riding, Trail and Reining champions at both the All American Quarter Horse Congress and the AQHA World Show, as well as many circuit and futurity champions. Dana’s daughter Brook has won the Congress four times, conquering the Horsemanship title two years in a row. She also won the All-Around Champion title one year and was Reserve All-Around Champion the next! Dana’s younger daughter, Bree, is a two-time Reserve Congress Champion in the Reining and was the AQHA Year End High Point Champion in 2010, 2011, and 2012! At the prestigious new AQHA Novice World Championship Show, Dana’s rider was an impressive 6th out of 108 in the Amateur Western Pleasure.

It was Dana’s success in the show ring that led to her desire to share her knowledge with the equine community, and this is how the “Winning Strides” series was born. Dana currently has nineteen DVD titles available. These DVDs have something to offer every rider at any level and in every discipline. These series’ are designed to educate horse owners and riders from the fundamentals of horse handling and horsemanship to becoming a World Champion in the show pen, in any event.

Dana also travels the world speaking at expos, equine affairs and clinics. She has been a clinician at the Mane Event in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada, and at the Equine Affaire in California, Massachusetts and Ohio. She has been a clinician at the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento, California and was the featured speaker at the South Dakota Horse Faire. Dana has given clinics at Montana State University, the 320 Ranch in Montana, and also books many private clinics for ranches and trainers across the nation. Dona Kay Rule – Minco, Okla.

Everyone who has success in the arena started somewhere, they were also inspired to compete by something or a someone. For Dona Kay Rule that inspiration came from her father who was involved in rodeo through team roping, broncs and bulls. Her riding career began with western pleasure and gymkhanas, but soon Dona jumped into the rodeo scene herself. “When I found out they gave money away at rodeos instead of ribbons, I was hooked!”, said Rule. The Rule family has always trained their own horses and Dona has continued to do that. Dona has already started this year off strong placing at several rodeos and now preparing for the American Semi Finals. She will be competing on a horse she trained named High Valor who was raised by Lana Merrick of Canadian River Quarter Horses.

Dona’s advice for finding and getting with a new horse is to find a reputable horseman to locate the level of horse you are ready for and be sure to get a thorough vet check, “Expect to take at least 6 months to a year to learn each other.” When asked what is one thing she has done that has helped her compete at such a high level Rule stated, “There is not one thing I have done to help me advance, there are so many things, but I would say the very most efficient way is to never stop learning.”

Jennifer Sharp

Jennifer’s husband, Robbie, is a team roper and a barrel horse trainer and she and her husband own Sharp Performance Horses. In 2012, she rode Slick By Design to the world championship at the AQHA World Show and won it again on Ima Perky Calfee. Lari Dee Guy

Lari Dee Guy was born and raised in Abilene, TX 1971. She has been roping and ranching since she was able to be on a horse. I am a 19-year-old freshman at Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC) where I am a member of the rodeo team competing in breakaway roping and team roping (heeler).  I have been competing in youth and amateur rodeo events for 10 years. Shelley Morgan

My name is Shelley Morgan, I am a professional barrel racer. I have trained and ridden horses since I was old enough to sit on a horse by myself. My horses are part of my family and I couldn’t imagine life without them in it, which is why I love taking care of them in every way I can. I have always felt like if I take care of my horses they will take care of me. One way I feel like I can take care of my horse is by using products that I feel benefit my horse and help them feel and perform their best. I have owned one of the horses I’m running now since she was 3 years old, she just turned 7. Her name is Kiss and I have ran her in a 5 star pad since I started competing on her. I can honestly say, of the trips she makes to the vet or chiropractic, she has never been sore in her back and I credit that to using a good quality pad that is made well and functions properly, allowing Kiss to function properly as well. I also have a now 8 year old mare, named Phoebe, that I have owned almost 2 years, and she runs in a 5 star pad as well. I love 5 star mostly because I feel like when I put the pad on my horses’ back, it fits properly to their back and isn’t too stiff nor too flimsy. I feel it gives the perfect protection under my saddle and allows my horses to be able to move properly and freely. Another aspect I love about my 5 star pad is the fact that I don’t feel I have to pull the girth so tight to keep my saddle from turning as I have with other pads, because it fits to their back so well. I also like the different thicknesses you are able to choose from according to the horse you will be using it on and each of their individual needs. And of course I have to mention how much I love how they look on my horses backs, wow, they are such pretty pads. And just an added extra, you can get on their website and customize them to look exactly how you want! Kiss and Phoebe run so good in their 5 star pads that they were able to qualify us for NFR 2020 in Arlington, Tx this past year. I’m a true believer in 5 star and I am truly honored to be part of their team, but either way I would still use 5 star pads on my horses simply because that’s the product that makes me feel I have my horses best interest in mind. Stevi Hillman

Stevi Hillman lives in Weatherford, Texas. She has been using 5 Star products for years. Stevi’s favorite pad is the 7/8″ Barrel Racer. Ben Masters

Ben Masters is a filmmaker, writer, and photographer currently living in Austin, TX. Masters studied wildlife biology at Texas A&M University and is most known for producing Unbranded and for directing The River and The Wall. He has written for National Geographic, Western Horseman, and has two books published by Texas A&M University Press. Masters is an award winning filmmaker with Audience Awards at Telluride Mountainfilm, Banff International Film Festival, Hot Docs International Film Festival, and recipient of the SXSW Louis Black Lone Star Award. He makes character driven movies about wildlife and wildlife habitat.

He’s guided pack trips across Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana and has spent three seasons working for an outfitter in the Teton Wilderness at the most backcountry camp in the lower 48. In 2010, he completed a 2,000 mile ride along the Continental Divide Trail and in 2013 he was part of the 3,000 mile “Unbranded” ride and documentary outfitting his horses in 5 Star Saddle Pads.

Trent Peterson – The Wild in Us

Trent Peterson is a custom saddle maker that builds light weight saddles built for the mountains and packing equipment that is tested to its full extent as being a professional packer.

“Everything I build or make, we use. I donate 3% of all my sales from my saddle shop to the National Ataxia Foundation to help fund research into the disease that killed my father, my grandfather, and possibly one day myself. Ive been a professional packer since 2005 when I lead my first string of mules into the North Cascades, and started packing in the Eastern Sierra in 2016 after my wife and I moved here permanently. And in 2017 I completed a ride from Mexico to Canada with 3 mustangs I adopted from the wild as untouched animals, and spent 8 months training them for the journey. At the end of the ride, 2 of the mustangs were auctioned off and I raised little over $20,000 for the foundation.

My wife has been packing in the Eastern Sierra for the last 16 years. As part of our passion for packing and our way of life, we teach weekly packing classes and put on full 3 day packing clinics where we will give you the tools to be able to safely go out into the backcountry with your own equine. This year we’ve taken the big step of purchasing our own pack station and will be offering full week long packing schools along with our custom made pack trips.

Along with packing, and saddle making my wife and I are trainers and we specialize in starting and training untouched mustangs and mules. We train them for both the sands of the arena, to the granite of the Sierra.”

Abbie Gibson began riding and showing at the age of 8. After enjoying much success in the equitation ring as a junior she went on to ride for the Skidmore College Equestrian Team. During her time there she helped the team to place consistently in the top 3 at IHSA nationals as well as obtaining individual top 3 placings. She also spent her summers working for professional show jumping, eventing, and dressage riders in Europe. After graduating Abbie went on to be the assistant coach for the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Equestrian Team. Shaun Sellers

Shaun Sellers started riding at the age of 10 under Swiss International Vaulting Champion and Eventer, Andrea Huber. There Shaun learned about an effective, balanced position, soft hands and the importance of being a horseman first. While with Andrea, Shaun joined the Northern Exposure Pony Club where he learned a substantial amount about horse care, equine first aid and was afforded great riding opportunities with top national and international dressage, show jumping, and 3 day event riders. Shaun credits much of his attention to detail and standard of care to his years in the United States Pony Club. Later, Shaun stepped into the jumper and local hunter rings before realizing great success the A rated level. In his early 20’s Shaun spent 3 months working on a breeding farm in NC, where he learned the basics of AI start to finish. After an educational summer Shaun was offered a job grooming for international show jumper, Andres Rodriguez, tending to the care of the horses on the national side at The Pfizer Million, and America Gold Cup. Shaun realized after a month of grooming an internationally competitive show string he missed being in the saddle, and accepted an assistant training position at Canterbury Stables in NY. There Shaun acquired a great 6 month education in dressage, riding with top dressage clinicians, and horsemanship clinicians. Shaun then was offered a position managing top hunters, and later jumpers for a private family in Chicago IL. It was here Shaun was really able to put all his education to use and focus on understanding the business side, while managing and maintaining the owners string of horses. After 5 yrs in Chicago, Shaun began freelancing and helping professionals from Kentucky, Mississippi, and New York run their farm/businesses through the summer. Most recently Shaun was offered the opportunity to start his own business in Marcy, NY. This new venture is where Shaun was able to put all his experience and education to work. For the last two years Shaun has helped clients reach all of their personal goals, bring along young horses, and build an excellent reputation in sales.

Will Abel

5 Star Team: Will Abel

Will Abel began his riding career at the age of 10 and quickly advanced through the levels in both riding and horsemanship. He started showing on the local AQHA circuits and branched out to NRHA, APHA, PtHA, and IEA throughout high school. A couple of Will’s biggest accomplishments were placing in the top ten and top 15 in the Varsity Open Reining at the IEA Nationals in 2016 and 2017. As Will’s horse-showing career progressed, showing the all-around became Will’s biggest passion, as he could exhibit the plethora of skills he had acquired throughout the years. Will started training professionally in October of 2017. From then on he has found a love for colt-starting, coaching his clients to multiple regional titles with APHA, and bringing his clients from the ground up in a way that allows them to flourish in and out of the show pen.
