Beat the Heat: How to Clean, Dry & Store Your Wool Saddle Pad This Summer

When summer temperatures climb, keeping your horse comfortable isn’t just about the gear you choose, it’s also about how you care for it.

Your 5 Star saddle pad is made from 100% pure wool, a natural fiber valued for its breathability, moisture management, and ability to help regulate heat. But during hot-weather riding, increased sweat, dirt, hair, and grime can build up within the wool fibers. Regular cleaning and proper storage help keep those natural fibers clean, breathable, and ready to perform.

Why Summer Saddle Pad Care Matters

Hot weather usually means more sweat.

Over time, dried sweat, hair, dirt, and oils can accumulate on the underside of your saddle pad. If that buildup becomes heavy enough, it can interfere with the wool’s ability to breathe and manage moisture.

One of the easiest ways to tell your pad needs a deeper cleaning is by feel. If areas that contact your horse have become hard, stiff, or crusty, and routine brushing no longer restores the wool’s flexibility, it’s time to clean your pad.

SUMMER CARE TIP: During the hottest months of the year, don’t wait until your pad is heavily soiled. Regular maintenance can help prevent buildup from becoming deeply embedded in the wool.

Start with Regular Maintenance

Your pad doesn’t need a full deep cleaning after every ride.

Between cleanings, remove loose hair, dirt, and debris from the underside of the pad. A 5 Star Dry Cleaning Sponge, rubber curry comb, or shop vacuum can help remove buildup before it becomes packed into the fibers.

The same basic care principles apply to 100% pure wool fleece. For more detailed fleece care instructions, see our

.

After a sweaty ride, give your pad plenty of room to air out before putting it away.

For a Deeper Clean: SOAK

You can wash and rinse your 5 Star saddle pad when needed, but for a true deep clean, we recommend soaking.

Why?

The

5 Star Saddle Pad & Tack Cleaner

is formulated with surfactants, enzymes, and microbial technology designed to work on the sweat, oils, dirt, grime, and odor-causing buildup found within natural wool fibers.

The microbial spores activate when they are exposed to water and organic matter. Giving your pad time to soak allows the cleaning solution to penetrate deeper into the wool instead of only cleaning the surface.

Don’t Just Wash It.

Let It SOAK.

How to Soak Your 5 Star Saddle Pad

For a deep summer cleaning:

  1. Fill a clean tub or container with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can damage the wool’s natural elasticity.
  2. Add 6–8 oz. of 5 Star Saddle Pad & Tack Cleaner per gallon of water.
  3. Fully submerge your saddle pad in the cleaning solution.
  4. Allow the pad to soak for at least 20–30 minutes.
  5. For pads with significant sweat, dirt, grime, or odor buildup, extend the soaking time up to 24 hours.
  6. Occasionally agitate the pad or cleaning solution to help the cleaner work through the fibers.
  7. Remove the pad and rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.

The longer soaking period gives the cleaner’s enzymes and microbial action time to work deep within the wool fibers, where a quick surface rinse may not reach.

Washing Is Still an Option

Sometimes your pad simply needs a good wash rather than a long soak.

Use lukewarm water and a neutral pH cleaner formulated for natural wool, such as

5 Star Saddle Pad & Tack Cleaner
.

When using a hose, hold the pad at an angle and work from the center outward so the dirty water and cleaner can move toward the edges rather than being driven deeper into the pad.

Rinse thoroughly. You don’t want cleaner or loosened grime left inside the wool.

For routine maintenance, washing works well.

For heavy summer buildup, soaking is the better choice for a deeper clean.

Drying Your Pad Is Just as Important as Cleaning It

A freshly cleaned wool saddle pad can take time to dry, and that’s okay. It will dry much faster in the summer sun, so that makes the warm summer months a perfect time to clean your 5 Star pad.

After rinsing, allow your pad to air dry completely outside or in a well-ventilated area. Depending on conditions, drying may take a few days. Give it time.

Don’t rush the drying process.
Never put a damp pad away in an enclosed tack room, trailer, storage container, or underneath other pads.

Your pad needs air circulation around it while it dries.

Beat the Heat: Don’t Store Your Pad in a Hot, Enclosed Tack Room

Summer storage deserves extra attention. A closed tack room, trailer, or other enclosed space can become extremely hot during the summer, especially when there is little airflow.

Whenever possible, avoid leaving your wool saddle pad for extended periods in a hot, enclosed, poorly ventilated area. Instead, choose a clean, dry storage location with good air circulation.

Never stack your saddle pads directly on top of one another for long-term storage.

Each pad needs room to breathe. Use a saddle pad rack, rail, or another storage method that allows air to circulate around the pad rather than trapping it between other pieces of tack.

Never Store a Damp Pad

This is especially important after a hot, sweaty ride.

Your pad may not feel soaking wet, but moisture can remain deeper within the wool fibers.

Before storing it:

  • Remove loose hair and debris.
  • Allow the pad to air out.
  • Make sure it is completely dry.
  • Give it its own space rather than stacking another pad or saddle directly on top of it.
  • Store it somewhere clean, dry, and well ventilated.

Proper drying and storage are part of proper saddle pad care, not an afterthought.

Your 5 Star saddle pad is designed to take advantage of the natural performance properties of 100% pure wool. Keeping those fibers clean and giving your pad plenty of airflow helps it continue doing its job of cooling and protecting your horse’s back ride after ride.
